Liverpool’s new signing Darwin Nunez has responded to criticism after his performance against Manchester United and Crystal Palace during the club’s pre-season tour. He used social media in order to silence his hater following the poor start to his Liverpool career.
Liverpool signed him from Benfica for an initial fee of €75m ($78.59m) with €25m in potential add-ons. This was considered a huge fee for the young Uruguayan striker.
Nunez made his Liverpool debut in a 4-0 defeat against Manchester United. During the game, he missed a huge chance after a shot from Mohamed Salah hit the post and bounced kindly in front of Nunez, but from about 10 yards out he managed to sky his effort into the crowd.
Against Crystal Palace, Nunez was handed 30 minutes, and again aside from one effort at goal, it was a tame performance from the 23-year-old which was highlighted by a miskick that has sent rival supporters reeling once again on social media.
Nunez has now responded by taking to Instagram and Twitter to hit back at his critics. The striker posted a picture with emoji of a man cupping his ears with the caption “Resiliencia” which translates to Resilience.
Nunez is still trying to get up to speed with Liverpool’s style of play and form a connection with those around him. His teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold after the game against Crystal Palace has also responded by saying,
He’s still kind of learning how we play, we’re learning how he plays, and soon enough we’ll get that connection.
I’m sure we’ll be able to supply him with the ball to score goals.
Nunez enjoyed a superb 2021/22 campaign at Benfica, scoring 34 goals in 41 games across all competitions. It looks like it’s going to take some time before we see anything close to the best of Nunez in a Liverpool shirt.
