Chelsea’s keeper Edouard Mendy hurts himself while stopping Jarrod Bowen in the box. He is on the ground in pain as Cornet takes a touch and hammers a shot into the roof of the net. VAR rules it out for a foul in the build-up.
After the first half ended with a 0-0 draw, Michail Antonio breaks the deadlock for West Ham in the 62nd minute. In the 76th minute, Ben Chilwell scored to equalize for the Blues. Kai Havertz in the 88th minute scored the goal to make 2-1 for Chelsea.
But the controversy started when Cornet scored the equalizer but VAR ruled it out. Cornet thinks he’s equalized, firing high into the net after Mendy had palmed the ball away from the feet of Bowen.
However, after a VAR check, the West Ham forward is penalized for a foul on the Chelsea keeper: he just caught Mendy’s arm with his studs as he hurdled him, but contact was minimal.
That seems an extremely harsh call. But there is going to be a lot of talk about that late disallowed Cornet effort.
Chelsea picked up a vital three points against their London rival West Ham but Tuchel’s side will feel very lucky to have done so.
