In the Round of 16 of on going Euro cup tournament, England took the revenge against Germany by defeating them 2-0. England has clearly sent the message that they are still a team to fear in major tournaments after defeating the much stronger side German in Round of 16 of Euro cup tournament.
England have defeated Germany in competitive matches for the first time in 20 years. The last time they did was in 2001 when Michael Owen scored a hattrick and the final result was 5-1.
England: A team to fear
A top quality performance of both teams were seen but England came victorious as goals by Sterling and Harry Kane did the job in deciding who goes to the quarters of Euro cup tournament. This underdog team England avenged the heartbreak their country had to face in Euro 1996 semi final game. That time Germany beat England on a penalty shootout and advanced to the finals. Later they won the tournament.
The first goal came in 75th minute from Rahem Sterling who did a very good job in finishing the ball setup by his fellow countrymen Luke Shaw. Sterling was the man who first started the ball in their rivals half. Kane, Grealish and Shaw combined to pass the ball to Sterling who made sure that the ball touched the German net with his right foot.
The second or the last goal of the game came from Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Kane made a difficult header to the ball assisted by Grealish in the 85th minute.
Kane was involved in both goals in setting up the ball for the first goal and scoring the second one proving that he is a top notch striker.
Other than the goals, the game was a pure display from both of the teams. Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save to deny England a goal in the starting half of the game. In the 45th minute, Harry Kane had a chance which was denied by Matts Hummels excellently. Later in the second half, after the first goal, Germany’s Thomas Muller made a one on one miss with the keeper. He was able to deceive the Pickford to go to the other side but failed to hit the ball in the post.
Worst run for Germany
2014 World Cup winner Germany had been looking shaky from the beginning of the tournament. Early losses to France and a draw with Hungary showed that they were not in the best of form. Their only good performances came against defensive champions Portugal who are also out after being defeated by Belgium.
It is the first time Germany is knocked out from Round of 16 in competitive matches.
Best game for England
Till now, England’s best performance is against Germany, They qualified from the group stages by defeating both Czech Republic and Croatia by 1-0 and 0-0 draw with Scotland. England will face the winner of Sweden and Ukraine in the quarter finals.
Can this year be the year for England to lift the cup for the first time in their history ?
